Get your motor (and lights) running: understanding outdoor electrics

Electrical components play a key role in alfresco extensions, particularly when you have a motorised opening roof.

Elements like motors and lights need careful consideration so you know your outdoor space is ready for use whenever you need it.

Motors

Let’s start with how you run your opening louvre system. The motor is an essential component (you might even need more than one) and picking a quality product will set your roof apart from others.

As you do your research, you should ask these 3 questions:

  • Does the motor conform to Australian standards?

  • What is the maximum area 1 motor can drive?

  • What is the warranty on the motor?

You’ll be pleased to know that GMC Home Improvements only uses motors that meet Australian standards. To get technical, our preferred option is a 24 V DC permanent magnetic motor with a protection class of IP66 (dynamic) and IP69K (static). Our motors come with a 5-year warranty, so you have lasting peace of mind.

Lighting

Outdoor lighting can be more of a challenge, but it’s no less important. We actually see it as an opportunity to get creative, especially if you have a louvre roof.

To make the best use of your lighting, think about these questions:

  • How will your seating be arranged?

  • If you have a barbecue, where will it sit?

  • Are there any focal points you’d like to light up?

You also need to know how to use the sunlight to your advantage. Consider:

  • which way your patio faces and its current sunlight exposure

  • how your extension is designed

  • which way your opening louvres run.

Need help figuring it all out? We’d be very happy to advise you on what’s possible.
